1972 Vintage Wineand Port
About the 1972 vintage
1972 Vintage Port :
A good vintage that was not declared, some vintage port and single quintas were produced in this year. Port wines from 1972 are now fully mature but well stored examples will last for many years more, making them a great 49 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.
1972 Italian :
Only a small crop of 1972 wine was produced in Italy and the wines are now very rare. The growing season was held back by inclement weather in the main Italian wine regions of Piedmont and Tuscany. Tuscany produced a small crop of Brunello and Chianti, generally characterised as having good colour, high acidity and some dryness. The best of the vintage originates from the more southerly regions.
1972 Bordeaux :
Bordeaux 1972 wines are generally characterised by having good colour, with dryness and high acidity. However, the style was for early drinking and very few examples exist today. The growing season was difficult with the grape development held back by inclement weather - this did not allow the grapes to fully ripen by harvest time. However, sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac of this year are very good.

This is the most representative and prestigious wine of the entire Valtellina region. It can be produced in all valleys (from Ardenno to Tirano), but only in hilly, well exposed vineyards having with loose soil and gravel. This wine is obtained from hand-made selection of the best bunches of Nebbiolo-Chiavennasca grapes, which are dried on wooden racks in a well ventilated and dry room, a "Fruttaio", for at least 110 days until late January. During this winter time the climate of the Valtellina region does all the work, drying the grapes. By late January the grapes have lost about 40% of their weight, the berries are dry and their concentrated juice has developed specific and very intense aromatic substances. After crushing, followed by a slow fermentation and at least 24 months of maturation and ageing, first in wood and then in the bottle, Valtellina SFORZATO becomes the unique expression of a grape, Nebbiolo, and a territory of this charming Alpine valley. Garnet reflections, has an intense aroma with hints of ripe fruit; different fragrances include the spicy and fruity scents typical of red fruit marmalade, cinnamon, vanilla and licorice. Its taste is dry, soft, textured and with character, with a hint of wood.

The Valpolicella zone is bordered to the west by the Bardolino DOC, located along the banks of Lake Garda, which produces similar wines to basic Valpolicella using many of the same grapes. The historical "heart" of Valpolicella winemaking is in the Monti Lessini hills located northwest of the town of Verona. In 1968, the boundaries of the region were extended far eastward towards the DOC production zone of Soave and south to the plains of the northern bank of the Po river and its tributary the Adige.

This leading indigenous red variety of the region has been at home in Alto Adige since as early as the sixteenth century, and it is being grown with broader and broader distribution. In recent decades, the area planted was drastically reduced, and thus Schiava gained considerably in quality and right now is experiencing a Renaissance. As a light wine with moderate tannins, floral tones of violets and fresh berries, it is also a popular aperitif wine when chilled. The wines can be full bodied when from Santa Maddalena, soft when from Lake Caldaro and spicy when from Merano. In terms of food pairings, this allrounder shines especially with the traditional South Tyrolean cuisine.

Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins.

Marzemino is a red Italian wine grape that is primarily grown around Isera, south of Trentino. The wine is most noted for its mention in the opera Don Giovanni of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ("Versa il vino! Eccellente Marzemino!"). The vine ripens late and is susceptible to many grape diseases including oidium. Wine produced from the grape has a characteristic dark tint and light plummy taste. Ampelographers have long theorized that the grape originated in northern Italy. Recent DNA profiling conducted at the research facility in San Michele all'Adige revealed Marzemino to have a parent-offspring relationship with the Friuli-Venezia Giulia wine grapes Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Teroldego which gives further evidence to its likely origins in this region.

A rare 1972 Petrus. 1972 Vintage wine Tasted: Jun 2013 Pale ruby with some strong brown notes. Smells so rich and seductive! Perfumed and wonderfully heady. Light bodied and sweet. An aperitif-style Petrus! (Served with canapés on the terrace.) Clean. A very good start even if at the end it's a little dried out and not wholly fresh. Slightly dusty, tired finish. But a wine on the way down with a beautifully rich initial impact. Jancis Robinson

Monica di Sardegna is a southern wine DOC in Sardinia, based around the town of Cagliari and the eponymous province of which it is the administrative centre. As implied by the name, the key grape variety from which Monica di Sardegna wines are made is the Sardinian curiosity Monica. This is grown almost nowhere else in the world, but has flourished here for centuries.
